History of the regulation of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners and acupuncturists in B.C.
Traditional Chinese medicine has been a designated health profession under the Health Professions Act since December 4, 2000. Acupuncture has been a designated health profession under the Health Professions Act since April 1, 1996. Before designation under the Health Professions Act, the professions were unregulated in British Columbia.
In 1996, the Government of British Columbia established the College of Acupuncturists of British Columbia (CABC). In 1999, CABC was expanded by the Government of British Columbia to amalgamate traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture as a whole in a unified college — the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of BC (CTCMA).
On June 28, 2024, the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of BC amalgamated with the College of Chiropractors of BC, the College of Massage Therapists of BC, and the College of Naturopathic Physicians of BC to form the College of Complementary Health Professionals of British Columbia.
