Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are reminded that the Practice Standard: Laboratory and Other Diagnostic Testing Referral is an important resource for understanding the limits and conditions related to diagnostic referrals, including imaging. This standard clarifies what falls within an ND’s scope of practice when ordering these services.
Under the Naturopathic Physicians Regulation, NDs in British Columbia may order certain diagnostic imaging studies, specifically X-rays and ultrasounds. At this time, NDs are not authorized to order CT (CAT) scans or MRI studies. When advanced imaging is clinically indicated, patients must be referred to a family or general practice physician who has the authority to request these services.
It is also important to advise patients that diagnostic imaging ordered by an ND is not covered by MSP. To have imaging funded through MSP, the referral must come from a licensed medical doctor.
